MARKUS RISSANEN

Markus Rissanen (b. 1973) is a painter, who is currently working on his doctoral thesis in the Finnish Academy of Fine Arts in Helsinki. Markus says that his paintings are "a kind of study made through artistic means. The motifs are either based directly on elements in the natural environment surrounding us or in the structures of abstract information diagrams used by the scientific disciplines investigating these elements." In his work, he is intentionally refraining from individualistic "painterly" style. Instead he uses painting technique which copies scientific, objective representation. Markus Rissanen is one of the most interesting upcoming artists in Finland.

ANTTI TANTTU

Antti Tanttu (b. 1963), Professor of Printmaking at the Finnish Academy of Fine Arts, is known for his woodcuts. Tanttu works by engraving an image onto wood, which he then prints onto Japanese paper and glues onto painted or gold-leafed sheets of MDF. His earlier works have tended to balance on the boundary between the abstract and the figurative. In the new works, the figures are given increased prominence. In essence, Tanttu´s works deal with the expression of private or shared experiences of existence. In 2006, Tanttu was recognised with the Kalevala Society´s inaugural Akseli Gallen-Kallela award.

ANNE TOMPURI

Anne Tompuri (b. 1958) is known for her black and white canvases in gouache and pigment. Tompuri´s works communicate a tremendous depth of feeling and the artist herself wishes for them to be experienced on the level of emotion. Anne Tompuri has held several solo exhibitions since her graduation from the Finnish Academy of Fine Arts in 1987. Her work can be found in many private and public collections.

KRISTIINA UUSITALO

Kristiina Uusitalo (b. 1959) attended the Finnish Academy of Fine Arts from 1978 to 1982 after which she studied in Tyler School of Art in Temple University, Philadelphia USA , from where she received her MA diploma in 1988. She says that many of her works are "illustrations of an epiphany-type moment of awareness. They are more like portrait of an experience than of a place, like stages that enable me to tell what I have experienced, discovered, anticipated. They witness the radiating intensity of a moment experienced and are simultaneously quiet and expressive." In 2005 she had an extensive solo exhibition in Oulu City Art Museum and in 2008 she received the State Prize for Visual Arts. She has an upcoming exhibition in Galleria Heino in spring 2010. Her works are included in every significant public collection in Finland.

JAN KENNETH WECKMAN

Jan Kenneth Weckman (b.1946), DFA, is an artist and painter. His media include painting, drawing and printing. He says of his art: "My paintings are waiting to be told, to be written down, to be given a story. I personally am relieved to be moving on. Having spent the last two decades at the High School of Art, I am sure you can imagine my feelings as I stand at the school gates." Weckman held his first solo exhibition in 1969, with retrospective exhibitions held at the Amos Anderson Museum in Helsinki in 2000 and at the Aboa Vetus & Ars Nova in Turku in 2003. His last solo exhibition was in Galleria Heino last year. He has received several awards during his long career and his work can be found in many significant collections in Finland and Sweden.
